Shadow Work

We all have aspects of ourselves that we try to hide or cover up from other peoples’ awareness. We don't even like to face these parts ourselves. These parts are known as the shadow, or (in IFS) exiled parts, or (in Voice Dialogue) disowned aspects of the self. They are filled with fear, shame, pain, and/or trauma, often from childhood but it can be from adult experiences as well. Imagine trying to hold down a beach ball under water. Eventually, no matter how hard you try to push it down, it will pop up. So, too, with the shadow.
